Lew Elder moved with his family to Canada when he was seven and they settled in Toronto. He began his racing career at 23 in the Dunlop Road Race. Between 1923 and 1928 Elder won 10 Ontario and Dominion titles. Elder turned professional in 1930 and joined the six-day racing circuit. He raced extensively in Canada, the United States and Europe, retiring in 1937. He was chosen as the 13th greatest Canadian cyclist of the 20th century.
