Biography

Erik Pettersson and his siblings Gösta, Sture, and Tomas were known as the Fåglum brothers, with the quartet enjoying success in Swedish cycling during the 1960s. Erik competed at two Olympic Games, winning two medals, and won three titles at the World Championships. In 1963 and 1964 he recorded back-to-back wins in the team time trial at the national championships to earn himself a place on the Olympic team. At the Games in Tokyo, he won bronze in the team time trial with his brothers Gösta and Sture, and compatriot Sven Hamrin. He also placed 11th in the road race, only 0.11 seconds behind the race winner.

Pettersson won further titles at the Swedish championships, including the team time trial (1965–69), the individual time trial (1967), and the individual road race (1967). From 1967 to 1969 he won three individual editions of the Solleröloppet one-day race, along with three team time trial titles with his brothers at the UCI Road World Championships.

In 1968 Pettersson returned to the Olympics for the Games in Mexico City, winning silver with his brothers in the team time trial. He also competed in the road race at the Games, as well as the team pursuit on the track, again with his brothers in the latter. Two years later Pettersson turned professional, but his only significant race victory came in Italy in 1971.
