Born in Portugal in 1934, José Ferreira later moved to Venezuela where he became a cyclist. In 1960 Ferreira was selected to compete for the country at the Roma Olympics. He finished 63rd in the individual road race, almost eight minutes behind the race winner, and 23rd in the 100 kilometres team time trial.
