Throughout the 1960s and 1970s Norwegian sportsman Arve Haugen competed in both speed skating and cycling. On the ice Haugen was a decent sprinter, specialising in the 500 metres and competing in five all-round speed skating championships from 1964 to 1969. On the road he started his cycling career with a junior individual time trial title at the 1960 national championships. As a senior rider Haugen won a national track title in 1963, before winning two more in 1970, in addition to becoming the national individual time trial champion. After another track title in 1971, he was then selected to compete at the 1972 München Olympics, finishing fifth with his compatriots in the team time trial. Haugen won a final track title in 1974 before retiring and starting a bicycle shop.
