Biography

Joe Jones was born in Wales in 1944 before emigrating to Canada in the mid-1950s. Jones studied at the Don Mills Collegiate Institute in Toronto where he was encouraged to become the best athlete that he could be. He began working in a sports store, where a chance encounter with the president of a local cycling club put Jones on the path to take up the sport. In 1965 he returned to the United Kingdom to ride in the Milk Race, finishing third on the opening stage and 10th overall in the general classification. Back in Canada he became the national road race champion in 1968, earning himself a place on the Olympic team. Jones then competed in both the road race and team time trial at the Mexico City Games, finishing 64th and 25th, respectively.

Jones rode in multiple races in Québec, Montréal, and Ontario, winning countless championships. In 2000 the Canadian Cyclist magazine named Jones in its list of the top 25 Canadian cyclists of the century. He later worked as a teacher and for an agency assisting individuals with complex learning needs. In 2010 Jones was inducted into the Whitby Sports Hall of Fame in Ontario.
