Roy Knickman was a junior prodigy, winning nine US Junior Championships, including five in one season: criterium, road time trial, road race, points race, and individual pursuit. He won three medals at the 1983 World Junior Championship, with a silver in team pursuit, and bronzes in the team time trial and individual pursuit. He placed fifth in the road race despite a broken wheel on the last lap. Knickman won the 1983 Intersport-Dusika stage race in Austria, the premier junior stage race in that era. He won a bronze medal at the 1984 Olympics in the team time trial. Knickman later became a firefighter in Southern California.
