Luboš Lom represented Czechoslovakia at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, where he rode in the men’s road race and the points race on the track. The following year, after the Velvet Revolution, Lom became one of the first Czechoslovak cyclists to ride in the professional peloton when he signed with the Italian-based team Navigare.
From 1992-94, Lom rode in three editions of the Giro d’Italia, and in 1993 he became the first Czech cyclist to ride in the Vuelta a España. On the second stage of the Vuelta, he finished in fourth place.
Arguably Lom’s finest moment came at the 1994 Paris–Roubaix. The race started in the rain, before quickly turning to snow. Prior to the first section of cobbles, Lom made a solo breakaway that lasted 130 kilometres, with his lead reaching 14 minutes over the chasing cyclists. The peloton eventually caught Lom, with Andriy Chmil going on to win the race.
