Cyclist Hugo Machado was a regular competitor at the Tour of Uruguay during the late 1940s and early 1950s. After a couple of podium finishes in 1949, Machado won stage eight of the 1950 edition of the race, finishing sixth overall in the general classification. In 1952 he won stage four, placing third overall, to earn himself a place on the Olympic team for the Helsinki Games. At the Olympics he competed in the individual road race where he finished 39th, more than 17 minutes behind the race winner. Over the next two years Machado continued to ride at the Tour of Uruguay, finishing fourth overall in 1953 and sixth in 1954.
