Until 2000, Egypt sent representatives to only one edition of the Olympic cycling tournament: 1924 in Paris. Since the sport was underdeveloped in the country, Abbas Halim, a member of the royal family and a sport patron, paid for three cyclists to attend the Games. Of them, only Mohamed Madkour completed the course, finishing 46th out of 71 entrants in the road race. He also took part in the 50 kilometers track race, but dropped out before the end of the competition. He was considered Egypt’s top representative in the sport during the Games as the other two cyclists, Ahmed Salem and Ali Mahmoud, lagged well behind him in the events.
