As an amateur Francesco Malatesta won two Italian sprint titles in 1929 and 1930. At the 1928 Olympics, he finished fourth in the tandem sprint with Adolfo Corsi and, at the World Track Championships the following year, Malatesta and Corsi again finished fourth. After that, Malatesta’s results were disappointing, largely due to there being many top-class track cyclists around at that time.
