Austrian cyclist Rudolf Maresch did not finish the road race at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Consequently, the Austrian team was unplaced. Maresch was also in the 4,000 metres pursuit team, eliminated in the first round.
From 1954-56 Maresch won the Austrian individual pursuit title three years in succession. He turned professional in 1958 and rode the Tour de France, but only until the second stage.
