Sergio Martínez was Cuba’s best-known cyclist, and one of the few from the island country that competed internationally at a competition other than the Olympic Games. Martínez raced four times in the Peace Race (1964-65, 1967-68) with a best finish of 61st in 1964. He also won the Vuelta à Cuba four of the first six times the event was contested – 1964, 1966, 1968-69, placing second in 1965, and third in 1967 and 1972. He died fairly young, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
