Michael McCarthy was a track pursuiter and road racer who rode the team pursuit at the 1988 and 1996 Olympics. His greatest title came in 1992 when he was professional World Champion in the individual pursuit. He also won World Championship bronze medals in the 1990 amateur individual pursuit, and the 1995 professional team pursuit. McCarthy won gold in the team pursuit at the 1987 Pan American Games. During his 16-year career, McCarthy won 17 US Championships. He was USA Cycling Athlete of the Year for 1990. As a professional he rode for Sunkyong/SKC, Celestial Seasons, Subaru-Montgomery and Saturn teams. McCarthy later settled near San Francisco where he worked in financial services as an institutional stock trader.
