Biography

Polish sportsman Eugeniusz Michalak had success as both a cyclist and a speed skater. In 1927 Michalak finished second in the national cycling road race to earn himself a place on the Olympic team. At the Amsterdam Games he finished 49th in the individual race, 50 minutes behind the race winner. After the Olympics he rode in the Tour of Poland, winning the opening stage, in addition to finishing second on stages three and five. Michalak returned to the Tour of Poland the following year, finishing second overall and winning five individual stages along the way. The same year he also became the Polish cross-country cycling champion, a title he would win again in 1930 and 1933. In 1931 he also became a national champion on the track, winning the tandem title with compatriot Artur Pusz.

In the winter months Michalak competed in speed skating events representing Polonia Warszawa. On the ice he won three national titles, winning the 1,500 metres and all-round titles in 1932, and the 500 metres title in 1934.
