Charles Pranke started out as a diver, winning titles in Chicago at the Chicago YMCA, Chicago Park District, and in Illinois Junior Colleges. He attended Valley State College in North Dakota, and later raced for the Montrose Cycling Club. Pranke became a physical education instructor, and for a time, was the program coordinator at the Dominguez Hills Velodrome in California, site of the 1984 Olympic cycling track competitions.
