From the late 1960s to the early 1970s cyclist Pedro Rodríguez was a veteran of the Vuelta a Cuba, riding in eight editions of the race, in addition to winning stages in 1971 and 1973. During the first half of the 1970s Rodríguez also enjoyed international success with the national cycling team. In 1970 he won silver in both the road race and the team time trial at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Panamá. One year later he arguably had the best result of his career when he won gold in the team time trial with Gregorio Aldo Arencibia, Roberto Menéndez, and Galio Arbelo at the 1971 Pan American Games. Rodríguez then competed in the road race and team time trial at the 1972 München Olympics, before winning gold in the team time trial at the 1974 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo.
