Biography

Following their Olympic victory in Athens, Arthur Rushen and John Matthews won the 1906 NCU tandem title. This was the only national championship that either Rushen or Matthews ever won, although together they set numerous British tandem records. In Athens, Rushen, a builder’s laborer who rode for Putney CC, also competed in the one-lap time trial, the 1,000 metre sprint, the 5 km. and the 20 km. but failed to place in any of these events. He made a second Olympic appearance in 1908 when he teamed up with John Barnard for the tandem event but they were eliminated in the first round.
