From the late 1950s to the early 1970s Gaynan Saydkhuzhin was one of the best cyclists in the Soviet Union, which saw him become a ten-time national champion. After winning national team time trial amateur titles in 1957 and 1959, Saydkhuzhin was selected to compete at the 1960 Roma Olympics, where he finished 34th in the individual road race. He then became a mainstay in the Soviet team at the Peace Race, winning five team titles (1961–62, 1965–67), along with the overall race classification in 1962. In 1964 he made his second appearance at the Olympics, finishing fifth in the 100 kilometres team time trial at the Tokyo Games. Saydkhuzhin had further success across Europe, winning the overall classification at the Tour of Turkey in 1969, followed by three stage wins at the Rás Tailteann in Ireland a year later.
