Ivan Trifonov was a two-time national champion with back-to-back wins in the 100 kilometres team road race in 1971 and 1972 at the Soviet championships. These results earned Trifonov a place on the Olympic team for the road race at the München Games, although he did not finish the race. During his brief career he won the Grand Prix cycliste de L’Humanité in France in both 1972 and 1973, along with victory at the 1973 edition of the Gran Premio della Liberazione in Italy.
