Biography

As a young man Chilean cyclist José Antonio Urquijo won two gold medals at the Pan American Youth Track Championships in 1978. Urquijo went on to specialise as a track cyclist throughout his career, winning several medals at the Pan American Championships in the early 1980s. In 1982 he set a national record for the 1,000 metres at the Chilean championships in Santiago, before winning bronze one year later in the sprint at the Pan American Games. These performances earned Urquijo a place on the Olympic team for the same event at the 1984 Los Angeles Games where he was eliminated in the round two repêchage. He also had some success on the road, winning stages of the Vuelta Ciclista de Chile in 1983 and 1984.
