In 1982 Belgian cyclist Frank Verleyen became the national junior champion on the track in the Madison. Over the next few years Verleyen won several local amateur races, including the under-23 editions of Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders in 1983. After a stage win at the 1984 edition of the Tour of Belgium he earned himself a place on the Olympic team for the Los Angeles Games, but failed to finish in the road race. Verleyen continued to race for the rest of the decade, picking up a few wins along the way, before retiring in 1990.
