Biography

Representing Okęcie Warszawa in the 1930s, Stanisław Zieliński had his first major success as a cyclist in 1933 when he finished fifth at the Tour of Poland. One year later Zieliński won the Express Poranny race, before becoming the Polish road race champion in 1936, earning himself a place on the Olympic team for the 1936 Berlin Games. At the Games he was in the main peloton of more than 20 riders who tied for 16th place, just three seconds behind the winning time. That same year he also won the Race to the Polish Sea and was named the best cyclist in the country by the Polish Cycling Federation. Zieliński worked as a labourer in a tool shop in the city of Starachowice. At the start of World War II he fled Warszawa during the September Campaign and was never seen again.
