Unlike the majority of the Shamrock Lacrosse Club that won gold at the 1904 Summer Olympics, George Cloutier had not been with the team when they won the 1903 Manitoba Provincial Championships. He was born in Ontario and lived there for many years, arriving in Winnipeg around the time when the squad travelled to the St. Louis World’s Fair. He left the city shortly thereafter, to suit up with the Montreal Nationals, but returned in 1905. Rejoining the Shamrocks, as well as several other teams along the way, he was a prominent member of the Winnipeg lacrosse scene for over a decade and, despite starting his career in defence, gained a reputation as one of the best goalkeepers in the sport. His success helped the Shamrocks to multiple championships and he was active until at least 1917. He was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame, along with the rest of his gold medal-winning team, in 2004.
