Edgar Aabye won an Olympic title as part of the mixed Danish-Swedish tug-of-war team that defeated the opposing French team at the 1900 Olympics. Aabye’s participation was somewhat of a coincidence: he was actually in Paris as a sports journalist, but was also a noted athlete himself. He had won a Danish title in swimming (1896), was a noted rower and also competed in cycling. In his capacity as a journalist, he worked for the broadsheet Politiken from 1892 - as the nation’s first sports journalist - until 1935. Before that, he had studied theology and taught history and geography at a middle school.
