José de Figueroa and his brothers Álvaro and Luis were sons of the Count of Romanones, a liberal politician and president of the Government of Spain on several occasions between 1912 and 1919, and nephews of the Marquis de Villamejor, the first IOC Member from Spain. José is best remembered as a member of the Spain polo team that took part in the 1920 Summer Olympics, winning the silver medal, although he was an alternate, and did not play. Just a few months after the Games he was killed in action during the Second Rif War with local rebels in Morocco.
