José de Figueroa and his brothers Álvaro and Luis were the sons of Álvaro Figueroa, the first Count of Romanones, a liberal politician and Spanish Prime Minister on three occasions between 1912 and 1919. Álvaro, who was considered the best player in Spain, and José competed in the 1920 Olympics whilst Luis and Álvaro took part in 1924. Luis played in just one mach, the 10-3 defeat by Great Britain in Paris, but with his brother alongside him it was the one and only time that any two of the siblings played together at the Olympics. Sadly, they could not emulate Spain’s silver medal winning performance at Antwerpen four years earlier as they could only finish fourth in the five-team round-robin tournament.
