The son of a wealthy industrialist, Auguste Fauquet-Lemaître inherited a fortune from the family’s textile business at Bolbec in Upper Normandy, He also inherited the Chateau le Valasse, which was built in the 12th century and was in the Fauquet-Lemaître family from 1830 to 1958. A Knight of the Legion of Honour, Auguste served on the committee of the Deauville Polo Club alongside fellow Olympian Édouard de Rothschild.
Fauquet-Lemaître spent a lot of time in England playing polo and riding with the famous Quorn Hunt in Leicestershire. He suffered a bad accident while riding with the Quorn early in 1899 when a broken arm kept him out of the saddle for around six months. A keen follower of the turf he owned some good quality racehorses. Fauquet-Lemaître was the former brother-in-law of fellow polo player Maurice Raoul-Duval and Auguste’s son Pierre Alfred was a good golfer who became the director of golf at the Deauville Golf Club. Auguste Fauquet-Lemaître was a member of the Polo Pony Society.
