Although he played rugby football for France at the 1900 Olympics, Jean-Guy Gautier was better known for his athletic feats. Gautier was a six-time French Champion between 1893-97, winning four titles in the 100 metres (1893-95 1897), and one each in the 400 m and long jump in 1894. In 1894 he set French records in the 400 m and long jump.
In rugby Gautier was a versatile player who could play as a forward or a back. He represented various clubs, starting with Olympique from 1894-96, then played for Oxford in Great Britain in 1896-97, and later played in France for Stade Français from 1897-1901 and again in 1913, and was with US Cognac from 1901-10, captaining that team in 1901-02. His teams twice lost in the finals of the French Championships, in 1895 with Olympique, and in 1901 with Stade Français. Gautier worked as a life insurance broker in Cognac.
