Fred Marshall was the son of a doctor who was also a British vice-consul in Athens. With living in Athens at the time of the inaugural Olympics Games in 1896, Marshall entered the lawn tennis competition and was scheduled to play in both the singles and doubles. He was drawn to meet his brother George in the singles, and the siblings were due to play together in the doubles. Fred was a non-starter, however, while George did go on to compete, but in the 100 and 800 metres track events,
