Arthur Havemeyer was the grandson of William Havemeyer, a three-time mayor of New York City, and the son of Theodore A. Havemeyer, the first President of the US Golf Association. Arthur was educated in Switzerland, at the Berkeley School in New York, and then graduated from Yale in 1904. While at Yale he was President of Phi Beta Kappa and worked on the Yale Daily News. Havemeyer played in the 1903 and 1904 US Amateur, making the quarter-finals in 1904.
Havemeyer initially worked in irrigation and land development in Colorado, but then moved to Groton, Connecticut and founded the Package Paper Co. In Groton he served in Rotary and with local charities. During World War II Havemeyer was active in USO work. His brother, Raymond Havemeyer, also played in the 1904 Olympic golf tournament.
