Walter Hersey played the Olympic golf tournament out of Normandie Golf Club in St. Louis, although he was from Massachusetts. He did not make the match play at the 1904 Olympic golf tournament, placing 51st in qualifying. Hersey attended Phillips Exeter Academy for prep school, and then Harvard College, graduating in 1903.
After college Hersey joined the water meter supply firm that had been founded by his uncle in 1859 and in 1924 succeeded his father as President of Hersey-Sparling Meter Company of Dedham, Massachusetts. He became an honorary member of Wellesley Country Club and Webhannet Golf Club of Kennebunk, Maine. Hersey was also an actor who appeared in many amateur theatre plays.
