William Smith was a member of the Philadelphia Country Club in a Philly suburb. He made match play at the 1904 Olympic golf tournament with 183, the final score to qualify, and then lost his first round match to Stu Stickney by 7&6. Smith was a better player than he showed at Glen Echo, as he played in match play at the US Amateur eight times, losing in the first round in 1901-03, but winning one match and losing in the second round in 1904, 1906, 1908, 1912, and 1916.
