Hugh Grogan was born in Toronto, Ontario where he played for local lacrosse teams in the 1890s before immigrating to the United States around the turn of the century, along with fellow Torontonian Jack Sullivan. They both settled in Chicago where they joined the Chicago Lacrosse Club, featuring in many matches between local teams as well as teams from neighbouring states throughout the mid-1900s.
His career also included a brief stint on the St. Louis Triple A (Amateur Athletic Association) lacrosse team which competed at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, playing two matches and finishing second, winning a silver medal. Noted as a proficient defense player, he later served briefly as a referee before retiring in the 1910s. He was married and had one daughter. An electrician by profession, Grogan continued to reside in Chicago until his death in 1950.
