Babe Slater came from northern California and went to school at “Cal Aggie,” now known as the University of California at Davis. While in school he played mostly basketball, but played enough rugby to make two Olympic teams. After graduating from Cal Aggie, he became a rancher in the Sacramento Delta, interrupted only by his infantry service in Europe during the 2nd World War. He returned to his hometown of Clarksburg and farmed there the rest of his life.
