Egyptian boxer Kabary Salem twice fought at the Olympics but lost in the first round in both 1992 and 1996. Salim turned pro in 1997, and fought as a pro through 2005. He was best known for a tough 12-round fight against super-middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe in 2004. Salem knocked Calzaghe down during the bout, but also head-butted him several times, and eventually lost a unanimous decision. Salem was known as one of the dirtiest fighters of all-time among the pros.
Another notorious bout was his September 1999 fight against Randie Carver during which Salem head-butted Carver repeatedly in the early rounds. Carver was knocked down in the 10th round and tried unsuccessfully to get to his feet four times before losing consciousness. Carver was rushed to the hospital but died two days later from blunt head trauma received during the fight. Salem won super-middleweight titles in some minor organizations, and compiled a professional record of 23 wins (12 by KO) and 5 losses (losing his last three fights), with one no contest
In October 2019, Salem’s daughter was murdered in a park in Staten Island, New York, and he was immediately a suspect. In an interview given to the New York Post, Salem denied any knowledge of what had happened to his daughter, Ola Salem, but he shortly thereafter fled the United States and settled in Kuwait. Over a year later he was extradited from Kuwait, and on 3 December 2020 he was arrested and charged with murdering his daughter by strangulation.
