Paul Barber, educated at King’s School, Peterborough, won 99 caps for England and played 67 times for Great Britain at left-back. For England he won a bronze medal in the European Cup in 1978 and silver medals in the 1986 World Cup and the 1987 European Cup. He was selected for the Great Britain team for three Olympics but missed making his Olympic début in 1980 due to the boycott of the Moscow Games. After winning a bronze medal at Los Angeles in 1984, Barber was vice-captain of the team which won gold in 1988. He played in all seven of Britain’s matches in Seoul and, as the corner striker, scored in each of the first five matches. Paul Barber, a quantity surveyor who played for Slough, is considered to be one of the best defenders in world hockey.
