Despite 38 international caps to his credit at the time, Scottish hockey player Gerry Carr did not make his Great Britain début until a few months before the 1968 Mexico Olympics. Carr had been considered for GB selection since 1963 but was never allowed permission for time away from his job as a Dundee physical education instructor. That all changed in 1968, however, when he went to the Olympics and played in six of Britain’s eight games, and in the 1-0 defeat by France Carr missed the chance to equalise when he put his penalty shot wide of the post. Great Britain finished 12th, out of 16.
A defender or midfielder, Carr attended Morgan Academy and then played for their former pupils XI. He won Perthshire County honours and also played for and captained the Scottish national side. He later became a hockey coach and was the national team coach for a while.
