During his time attending Bishop´s Stortford School, Charles Jones was captain of the hockey first XI. Upon going to St. John´s College Cambridge in 1955 to study geography and education, he won his hockey Blue in 1957 and played in the Varsity Match against Oxford again in 1958 and 1959, and was captain in the latter year.
A defender, Jones was selected to play for the Hockey Association in 1958 and later went on to play for England. He appeared at two Olympics and was in the GB squad that finished fourth at Roma in 1960 and equal ninth at Tokyo four years later. Jones toured India with the Great Britain squad in the winter of 1963/64. He played his club hockey with Southgate and Bishop´s Stortford, and won Hertfordshire county honours. Having helped with the coaching of juniors and schoolboys, Jones was appointed England coach and manager by the Hockey Association in 1968.
A Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Jones became a schoolteacher in the 1960s after completing his National Service. He first taught at his former school at Bishop´s Stortford until 1975 when he was appointed headmaster of Bedford School. During his time at Bedford he represented the school at the memorial service for a former pupil, the famous Olympic rower Jack Beresford in 1978.
In August 1986 Jones took up a post as director of studies with the Britannia Royal Naval College at Dartmouth until 1988, after which he became involved in education management and consultant services. Jones was also a good cricketer and played two First Class matches for Cambridge University in 1959, and also played Minor Counties cricket for Hertfordshire.
