Roger Midgley played most of his competitive hockey during his time in the Royal Navy. He worked his way up to a commander and on the way played for, and captained, both the Royal Navy and Combined Services hockey teams. He played for the latter against Pakistan on their 1950 tour of England. Midgley made his England début during the 1951 Festival of Britain Games. He also played representative hockey for the Hockey Association, the West of England and the United Services. In addition, he played county hockey for his native Devon and, during his naval career in Portsmouth, with Hampshire. Towards the end of his career, Midgley was based at the Royal Naval Engineering College at Manadon in Wiltshire.
