Biography

In the 1960s Derek Miller was regarded as one of British hockey’s finest wingers. An excellent outside-left, he occasionally played at inside-forward and, towards the end of his career, was a wing-half.

Educated at Kingston Grammar School, Miller played all his club hockey with the Old Kingstonians club. He played for the Hockey Association against the 1958 touring South Africa universities team and in 1959 he won representative hours with the South of England. That year he also toured Poland with England, and Germany with the Great Britain squad. Miller was also a Middlesex county player and was in their side that beat Gloucestershire to win the 1959 County Championship. Miller was in the Great Britain team that finished fourth at the 1960 Roma Olympics, and he was called up for a second Olympic appearance at Tokyo four years later.
