Bettina Blumenberg and the West German field hockey team were fifth at the 1988 Seoul Games after a 4-2 win against Canada in the classification round, in which Blumenberg scored three goals. Sgew was also European Indoor Champion in 1985 and 1987, and outdoor World Champion runner-up in 1986. She won 79 international caps (including 10 indoor) between 1985-89.
Domestically, Blumenberg played with Eintracht Braunschweig and later Uhlenhorster HC Hamburg. She later became an avid golf player. Her son Felix Heinicke also became a field hockey international.
