Midfielder Günther Brennecke played field hockey for Goslarer SC and reached the final of the West German Championships just once, when Goslar lost 1-2 to SC Brandenburg in 1956. He won 46 international caps between 1951 and 1960, including his participation in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, where Germany lost 1-0 in the quarter-final to the Netherlands 0-1, and at Melbourne in 1956, when Brennecke earned a bronze medal after an unexpected 3-1 win over Great Britain in the third place match. In 1954 he was also part of the West Germany team that won the unofficial European Championships.
