Charanjit Singh helped India win a gold medal in hockey at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, after he had played on their silver medal winning team in 1960. In 1962 he also helped India win silver at the Asian Games. Singh graduated from Col Brown Cambridge School, Dehradun, and Panjab University. He later worked as director of the physical education department at Himachal Pradesh University in Shimla. Singh had a difficult final few years. He suffered a stroke and was paralyzed for the last five years of his life before succumbing to a cardiac arrest.
