Balbir Singh Dosanjh is one of the legends of Indian hockey, winning three gold medals at the 1948, 1952, and 1956 Olympic Games. In 1952 and 1956 he was selected as the Indian flagbearer at the Opening Ceremonies. In 1952 Singh Dosanjh scored five goals in the tournament final, still an Olympic record for most individual goals in a hockey final, and led all scorers that year with nine goals for the tournament. Singh Dosanjh also won a silver medal with the Indian team at the 1958 Asian Games, and at the 1982 Asian Games, he was selected to light the flame at the Opening Ceremony in New Delhi. Singh Dosangh later became a well-respected coach, coaching or managing the Indian national team at the World Cup, Asian Games, and Esanda Trophy, and never failing to lead the team to a medal performance. In 1957 Singh Dosanjh became the first hockey player or sportsman to be awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honor given by the Indian government. His business career was with the Punjab Government in the police and sports departments.
