From 1956 to 1970 Malaysian field hockey player Chelliah Paramalingam represented the national team. In 1962 Paramalingam won bronze with the team at the Asian Games in Jakarta with a 2–0 victory over Japan. Two years later he was part of the squad for the hockey tournament at the Tokyo Olympics, playing in seven matches and scoring two goals in their 3–3 draw against Belgium. Paramalingam returned to the Olympics in 1984 as the coach of the men’s team at the Los Angeles Games. In 1999 he was honoured with the Best National Coach award for his contributions to the sport.
