Singaram Balasingam was considered a legend in Malaysian hockey (field). He made his international début at the 1968 International Hockey Tournament in Lahore, Pakistan and played for Malaysia at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics and at the 1973 World Cup in Amsterdam.
Balasingam worked for 22 years as a technical soil surveyor for the Rubber Research Institute (RRI). He and his wife later started a fertilizer business. He played for the RRI Rec Club, but later in life played with the Selangor Club. Balasingam took up golf and became a single-digit handicap player in his later years. He was inducted into the Olympic Council of Malaysia Hall of Fame in 2004.
