Debuting at the 1978 World Cup, Fieke Boekhorst gained fame as the first female field hockey player known for her powerful penalty corners. She played 90 matches for the Dutch team, scoring 106 times. Along the way, she picked up gold medals at the 1978 and 1983 World Cup, the 1984 Olympics and 1984 European Championships. In the Dutch league, Boekhorst played as a defender for Eindhoven, but never managed to win the title. Her career abruptly ended in 1986, when she sustained a serious knee injury during an indoor hockey match, causing her to miss the 1986 Hockey World Cup in the Netherlands as a player. Dutch coach Van Heumen promptly employed her as team analyst. Boekhorst is currently active as a youth coach in her native Helmond.
