Blake, a player for Northland Hockey, played for the New Zealand national team in 1958 and 1961-1964, quitting after the Tokyo Olympics. He then became a selector for the national team in 1975, and from 1984 to 1988 coached the New Zealand squad. Blake also played one First Class Cricket match for Northern Districts in the 1964–65 season.
