Maurice MacGonigal started his artistic education as an apprentice in his uncle’s stained glass studio. As an activist for Ireland’s independence, he was interned in a Dublin prison and later in a camp in Northern Ireland. After being released in 1921, he received a scholarship for the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art. One of his teachers was Olympian Seán Keating. MacGonigal later became a teacher and professor at this school, now called the National College of Art. MacGonigal became a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy and eventually Keating’s successor as their president 1962-1977. He produced paintings as well as set designs, book illustrations, posters and murals. His painting The Boat Race (oil on canvas, 41 x 61 cm) was only mentioned in Irish sources and was not included in the catalog of the art exhibition.
