Irene Broe came from a family of sculptors and was the younger sister of Desmond Broe. In 1951 she graduated in sculpture from the National College of Art and Design and became part of the art scene in post-war Dublin. For some time, she worked in Malaysia, where she created a bust of Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman (1903-90). Also well-known are her heads of Irish personalities and statues of saints, especially that of St. Valentine in the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Dublin. The submitted work The Winner was a plaster model, created in 1951.
